Our Favourite Solar Inventions: Solar Bottle Light

In a great of example of how sometimes the best solution is the most simple, the Philippines based MyShelter foundation is bringing the gift of light to 1000s of needy people.

For many in the Philippines, windows and electricity is seen as a luxury, creating incredibly dark conditions inside, even during the middle of the day. Isang Litrong Liwang (A Liter of Light) is a sustainable light project that is trying to help people overcome that problem with extremely simple technology. Armed with nothing more than a plastic bottle, water, and a few drops of chlorine and salt the team is able to light up homes without electricity.

Designed and developed by MIT students, the Solar Bottle Bulb is now being distributed throughout the Philippines, and the MyShelter Foundation plans to light up a million homes this year. Check out the video below showing the Solar Bottle Light in action:

In Australia, we are lucky enough to afford electricity, but that doesn’t mean we have to pay for it. Check out our solar power packages or contact the team to start saving money on your power bill today!
